All the cherry trees listed in this section are pot grown so they can be planted at any time of year, but if you would like bare root cherry trees (for planting between November and March only) please contact us. If you're baking with the cherries you've grown, a good trick for ensuring your cherry pie retains that vibrant shade of red is to use sour cream instead of milk in your baking recipes as the chemicals in baking powder can turn them blue. Another tip that really brings out the flavour in your home made cherry pies is to add a ¼ teaspoon of almond extract.

History & Culture of Cherry Trees

Cherries are stone fruits and part of the same family as almonds, peaches, apricots and plums. These delicious fruits can be traced back to 17BC when they were first brought to Rome from historic Armenia. Cherries were first introduced to England by Henry VIII who tasted them in Flanders.

The English name cherry, French name cerise and Spanish name cereza are all derived from the Latin cerasum and the ancient Greek place name Cerasus. Cerasus is now a city in Northern Turkey called Giresum where cherries were first exported to Europe. Turkey is also the top producing country for cherries with over 400,000 tonnes of fruit produced in 2011.

Traverse City, Michigan is known as the Cherry Capital of the World and produces 75% of America’s tart cherries. The National Cherry Festival has been held here since 1925 and includes competitions such as, cherry pie eating contests and cherry pit spitting.
