Choosing Ornamental Pear Trees

Ornamental Pear trees are part of the Pyrus genus that comes from the Rosaceae family and they are native to Asia, Europe, and Northern Africa. The ornate white flowers that cover the trees in spring and the bold foliage colours of autumn are the star attractions. Summer foliage varies from silver-grey to dark green depending on the variety. Whilst fruit is produced on many varieties of Ornamental Pear tree, it is usually small and hard so best left for wildlife to enjoy eating. The variety of habits available make Ornamental Pear trees suited to many garden styles from cottage gardens to contemporary gardens. Pyrus calleryana 'Chanticleer' and elaeagnifolia Kotschyana are upright and lend themselves well to formal settings, being popular for avenue planting or screening purposes. They are equally great for small spaces and can be planted near a wall. The weeping varieties, such as Pyrus salicifolia 'Pendula', have a more relaxed and graceful appearance, lending themselves to informal garden styles.

Planting & Growing Ornamental Pear Trees

Pyrus are easy to grow and require very little care throughout the year. They prefer a position in full sun and will grow well in most soils that are reasonably fertile and well-draining. We recommend a slight pruning in September or early December, depending on the variety.

Uses of Pyrus Trees

Pyrus wood does not warp and thus makes it the material of choice for architect’s rulers and other measuring tools. It is also used for making woodwind instruments and fine furniture.
