Description

The perfect small garden tree, Prunus 'Spire' has an upright form that fans out slightly in maturity to a vase shape. A cloud of pale pink, single flowers that fade to a pretty white colour appears in April, these are very popular with bees. New foliage has a pinkish-bronze hue, this attractive new foliage keeps its bronze colouring for a few weeks before turning a soft mid-green and then adopting rich autumn tints of red and gold.

This lovely Flowering Cherry tree will grow to an estimated height and spread of 5 x 3 metres in 20 years and grows well in most well-drained soils. Tolerant of pollution, Prunus 'Spire' will do well in urban areas and looks stunning in an avenue or equally as magnificent when grown as a single specimen tree.

Aftercare Advice

Flowering Cherry trees require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

It is beneficial to carry out formative pruning for the first few years by creating a balanced branch framework and removing badly placed shoots. After two to three years, you will only need to remove any damaged or unwanted branches. On top grafted forms, very occasionally the grafted stem may produce shoots and these should be pruned back. The best time of year to prune Cherry Blossom trees is straight after flowering.
