Description

Small in stature but big on impact, Prunus 'Asano' produces exceptionally fluffy pink flowers in abundance, with up to 100 petals per blossom! Grown in clusters resembling pom poms, its blossoms cover this tree’s slender form in April for a spectacular floral display. Young serrated leaves emerge alongside this tree’s flowers in bronze which gradually develop into a deep green colour in the Summer. A beautifully elegant ornamental Cherry tree, Prunus ‘Asano’ is the perfect Springtime showstopper for small to medium gardens.

Named after a feudal lord in Japan’s history, this tree has ascending branches and an upright habit, and will grow to 5 x 2.5 metres in 20 years, though it is easy to keep our top grafted version much smaller. An excellent choice where outdoor space is limited, Prunus 'Asano' prefers a sunny position for achieving the best autumn colour. It tolerates most reasonably well-draining soil types, and, once established, it can withstand some drought.

AKA Flowering Cherry 'Asano', Cherry Blossom tree, Prunus 'Geraldinae'

Aftercare Advice

Flowering Cherry trees require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

It is beneficial to carry out formative pruning for the first few years by creating a balanced branch framework and removing badly placed shoots. After two to three years, you will only need to remove any damaged or unwanted branches. On top grafted forms, very occasionally the grafted stem may produce shoots and these should be pruned back. The best time of year to prune Cherry Blossom trees is straight after flowering.
