What's Flowering on the Nursery This Week?

We’re now halfway through April, and with spring in full swing, we’re starting to see many of our trees bursting into flower, brightening up the Ornamental Trees nursery with their bright and wonderful blooms. We’re seeing a profusion of colours, from pinks and whites to purples and blues, and we are here for it!

We’ve managed to snap a few photos of some of the trees and shrubs that are flowering on the nursery this week, before they’re prepped for dispatch and shipped out to eagerly awaiting customers.

Prunus incisa 'Kojo-no-mai' | Dwarf Fuji Cherry Tree

What this lovely little Fuji Cherry tree lacks in size, it makes up for with masses of beautiful white flowers. Prunus incisa 'Kojo-no-mai' has unusual zig-zagging branches, and while it looks delicate it is actually tough and easy to grow. It’s ideal for smaller gardens and would make a perfect patio tree.

Malus 'Snowcloud' | Double Flowering Crab Apple Tree

This delightful Crab Apple tree produces a profusion of double flowers. We love the contrast in colours created by the bright white petals against the dark pink buds. The flowers are more long-lasting than other varieties so can be enjoyed all the more for it. After flowering we’ll expect Malus ‘Snowcloud’ to produce small, yellow fruits which are a great source of food for wildlife. Tolerant of pollution, this tree would be an ideal choice for an urban area.

Prunus ‘Asano’ | Upright Flowering Cherry Tree

This upright Cherry Blossom tree was hard to miss with its standout pink flowers. Emerging in clusters resembling pom-poms, Prunus Asano’s flowers grow in abundance with up to 100 petals per blossom. An absolute show-stopper of a tree, Prunus Asano is an ideal choice for those looking to make an impact in a smaller space.

Exochorda serratifolia 'Snow White' | Exochorda Tree

Spring frosts are no match for the Exochorda serratifolia 'Snow White', as it is native to Korea and Manchuria, which both experience cold springtime temperatures. The elegant, 5 petalled flowers emerge from small, pure white buds which resemble pearls, earning it the nickname of Pearl tree.

Prunus cerasifera 'Spring Glow' | Purple Leaved Plum Tree

This stunning Cherry Plum Blossom tree grows vivid pink flowers against blackish stems and dark purple leaves for a dramatic floral contrast. The foliage which has just emerged will remain a feature until autumn for extended interest. Prunus cerasifera 'Spring Glow' has a neat, upright form and is ideal for small and medium-sized gardens.

Ceanothus 'Trewithen Blue' | Californian Lilac Tree

How gorgeous are this Californian Lilac’s rich, blue flowers? Having just emerged, they are still fairly young and will continue to bloom, lasting into summer for plenty of enjoyment time. It is an evergreen so will keep its deep green foliage for year-round interest – ideal as a foil for neighbouring plants in the summer and for adding substance to the garden in winter.
