With several major flower shows of the year already wrapped up, it's an ideal time to look at the trends that are emerging.Sustainability is prevalent in the media, so perhaps it is of little surprise that a key theme of Chelsea Flower Show was natural planting. Native flowering plants such as Foxglove (Digitalis), Dog rose (Rosa canina) and Primrose (Primula vulgaris) are ideal for attracting wildlife such as bees.With the opening of a brand new 'Mindfulness Gardens' category at Chatsworth Flower Show, many of the show gardens had elements that encouraged mindfulness, relaxation and well-being. This was done through creating private havens, incorporating natural elements and using texture to draw attention to the present moment. Texture can be incorporated through almost anything, including smooth stone, gravel, ribbed foliage, peeling bark, grasses and water.Another underlying trend of both Chelsea and Chatsworth was the abundance of trees. Mature trees were particularly popular at Chelsea, whilst Chatsworth hosted a 'Power of Trees' display to celebrate and encourage the use of trees in modern life. For an on-trend choice, consider planting native trees such as Silver Birch (Betula pendula), Flowering Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) and Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia).
