Container grown plants, also known as containerised or potted plants, have been growing in their container for at least 12 months. They retain all their root system and can be planted at any time of year. The majority of our trees are potted plants.
Bare root plants are dug from the fields in the late autumn to spring period, when the plants are dormant. They have no soil around the roots. Rootballed plants are dug from the fields between autumn and spring.
A ball of soil is retained around the roots, to preserve the fine root system and protect from dessication and frost. Trees dug in this manner have better transplantation success than the equivalent bare root trees.
