Description

A beautiful twining climber, Wisteria brachybotrys 'Shiro Kapitan' produces masses of fragrant flowers in an elegant, snow white colour – a very attractive alternative to the purple and pinks usually associated with Wisteria. The flowers, which emerge in late spring to early summer, dangle from the plant in sprays that can reach up to 15cm long for a wonderful floral display. Seed pods emerge after flowering for further interest and the soft green foliage, which is bright green in summer, turns golden yellow in autumn.

Originally from Japan, Wisteria 'Shiro Kapitan' is fully hardy and has received the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the RHS, so can be expected to perform reliably in a UK garden. This Silky Wisteria prefers a sheltered, full sun position for the best blooms (though will tolerate partial shade) as well as a moist, well-draining soil. Plant against a sunny wall, trellis or pergola for support and enjoy this climbing plant in all its glory. Approximate height and spread in 20 years is 6 x 4 metres.

As with all our Wisteria, this Silky White Wisteria is grafted and tends to flower at a younger age than those grown from cuttings.

AKA Wisteria Shira Fuji, Wisteria brachybotrys 'White Silk', Wisteria venusta 'White Silk', Silky White Wisteria, Wisteria brachybotrys f. albiflora 'Shiro-kapitan'

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
