Description

Spiraea japonica 'Anthony Waterer' is a compact and upright deciduous shrub, typically reaching an approximate height and spread of 1.5 metres. It is renowned for its vibrant summer flowers and attractive, colour-changing foliage. In spring, the young leaves emerge a bronze-red colour, maturing to a dark blue-green in summer, and eventually turning shades of red in autumn before they fall. Blooming from late spring to midsummer, this Japanese spiraea variety produces dense clusters of bright pink to magenta-red flowers that are highly attractive to pollinators and add a striking splash of colour to the garden.

Spiraea japonica 'Anthony Waterer' thrives in well-drained soils and prefers a position in full sun to partial shade. It is relatively low-maintenance and well-suited for use in mixed borders, as a low hedge, or as a standalone specimen. The plant's compact form and profuse blooming make it an excellent choice for adding seasonal interest and vibrant colour to any garden setting.

AKA: Spiraea × bumalda 'Anthony Waterer', Japanese spiraea 'Anthony Waterer'

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
