Description

This gorgeous small garden tree produces attractive fluffy corymbs of white flowers in May-June which are popular with the birds. The autumn colour is quite astounding in vibrant scarlet red. The berries that appear in the autumn are more orange than those on the parent variety (commixta) and are popular with birds.

Sorbus commixta 'Embley' is neater in form and more compact than commixta. Expect a height and spread of 6 x 4 meters in 20 years from this Scarlet Japanese Rowan. It is a very tough Rowan tree, suited to many conditions including exposed sites, although it does prefer a position with slightly acidic soil.

With the RHS Award of Garden Merit, 'Embley' is a small ornamental tree that is feature packed and a good choice when there is only room for one variety.

Aftercare Advice

Rowan require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

Rowan trees require a strong framework to support their many berries, so it is good to encourage this by raising the crown in summer. Simply prune the lower branches and any crossing, damaged or diseased branches within the crown. Hard pruning can be carried out in the dormant season, from autumn to winter.
