Description

Malus 'Prairifire' is a medium-sized spreading tree with impressive, vibrant pink flowers.  This beautiful tree blossoms in spring and attracts pollinators. It is followed by purple-red crab apple fruits that birds eat, making it a fantastic choice for a wildlife garden. The leaves are also an impressive feature, starting as red leaves that mature into mid-green leaves with red veins.

'Prairifire' Crab Apple tree prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade, within an exposed or sheltered position. It is best planted in moist but well-drained, acidic soil. Its ultimate height and spread are 6 x 6 meters.

Planting Steps

Aftercare Advice

Crab Apple trees require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

You can harvest culinary Crab Apples in early autumn or leave them for birds to enjoy. The trees should be pruned in winter but do not require hard pruning. Avoid trimming the tips of branches. Simply remove any dead or damaged branches and shoots at the base of the tree i.e. suckers and water sprouts.
