Description

The Malling Elizabeth Plum is a stunning new variety, named after our late queen Elizabeth to coincide with the Platinum Jubilee 2022. This heavy-cropping, self-fertile tree produces an abundance of large, red-purple plums with juicy golden flesh and a sweet flavor. Perfect for eating fresh or cooking, the fruits ripen in mid-July, marking the start of plum season. The tree provides further interest with pretty white blossoms in spring, just before the plums start to arrive.

Malling Elizabeth is disease-resistant and easy to grow, and is ideal for small gardens or containers. It will thrive in hardy conditions and prefers full sun to partial shade in a sheltered position. Will grow in a variety of well-drained soils.

We offer Elizabeth Malling in Bare Root, which means it is a tree that has been lifted out of the ground during its non-growing season and is supplied without a pot or soil. 

Planting Steps

1Preparation

  • Pot-grown plants can be planted at any time of year, whereas bare roots need to be planted between November and March.
  • Clear weeds and grass within a metre of the planting hole.
  • Dig a hole as deep as the root mass and twice as wide.
  • To help your plant establish more effectively, sprinkle Rootgrow in the hole.

2Planting

  • Gently loosen the roots and place into the planting hole.
  • Ensure the top of the plant's compost is flush with the level of the surrounding soil and the graft union or collar of the tree is above ground level.
  • Mix 50% of the original soil with 50% compost.
  • Fill in the hole, firming the soil gently.

3Last Steps

  • Water generously around the base of the plant.
  • If you are planting either a single stem tree or mature standard tree, we recommend adding a staking kit and rabbit guard.
