Description

Cornus alba 'Elegantissima' provides a variety of interest year-round, particularly in winter when the red stems make a dramatic impact. It is a very hardy deciduous shrub with oval variegated leaves that are grey-green with a white margin. Clusters of tiny cream flowers form around May and June, which are then replaced by white berries. The leaves drop to reveal the bold red stems beneath that are the source of its common name, Red Barked Dogwood, and provide stunning winter interest.

'Elegantissima' will grow in most soil conditions, preferring well-drained soil. They are fast growing, producing a large shrub around 4 metres high x 4 metres wide in 10 years. Whilst the brightest winter bark is produced in full sun, they are content in partial shade. Dogwoods look great either individually or as a group for adding colour to winter borders.

We also offer other Dogwood shrubs with different coloured stems.

Planting Steps

Aftercare Advice

Dogwood shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

Avoid pruning Dogwood shrubs in the first year. Each subsequent year we recommend pruning hard around February, so you benefit from enjoying the colourful stem for a little longer without any detrimental effect on spring growth. Follow pruning by mulching and fertilising to encourage new growth, as it is this new growth that displays the vivid colours.
