Description

Cercis canadensis var. texensis 'Texas White' is a stunning selection, producing large clusters of white flowers on bare branches in April-May. The spring flowers are followed by purple tinted seed pods in summer. The leaves are green and heart shaped, emerging after flowering and turning lovely shades of yellow in the autumn.

This variety of Cercis (propagated in the US) is a beautiful medium sized tree or large shrub. Cercis 'Texas White' is well shaped, bushy and rounded. It will grow to 4 x 4 metres in 20 years. This white Cercis has dark, almost black bark, in itself an attractive feature.

Named the Judas tree, as legend suggests that Judas Iscariot hung himself from its branches. The white Judas tree is very deserving of a space in the garden and will thrive in most soils.

All Cercis varieties are suited to an open, sunny situation with well-drained soil and are reasonably drought tolerant once established.

AKA Judas tree, White Judas tree, Cercis reniformis 'Texas White'

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
