Description

This is a multi stem version of Betula utilis jacquemontii 'Snow Queen', with a wonderful form that displays the pure white, peeling bark to best effect all year round. Mustard tinted catkins hang from the branches in spring and silky green foliage turns creamy yellow in the autumn, completing the year round interest offered by 'Snow Queen'.

It is rightly our top selling multi stem Birch, favoured for the snow white bark developing earlier than other white stemmed Birches and the less vigourous nature making it suited to smaller gardens. Growing to 6 x 5 metres in 20 years, this robust multi stem Himalayan Birch will tolerate virtually all soils and conditions. We also offer a single stem 'Snow Queen'.

AKA Multistem Betula 'Snow Queen', Himalayan Birch 'Snow Queen' multi-stem

Nigel's Nursery Notes: Betula utilis jacquemontii 'Snow Queen' and 'Doorenbos' are actually the same variety. 'Snow Queen' is the newer British name.

Aftercare Advice

Multistem Himalayan Birch trees require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. Unlike many species, Birch prefer wet soil than dry. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

Multistem Birch trees rarely require pruning and do not take well to hard pruning, as this increases light at the base of the tree, which in turn increases soil temperature and decreases moisture levels. Simply remove lateral shoots to maintain a clear trunk and prune any diseased or damaged branches. Pruning should be carried out in late summer to mid-winter. Birch trees bleed heavily at other times of the year, especially late winter.

Tip: to keep the colourful bark looking its best, you can wash it using water and a sponge.
