Description

Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpurea' is a small, spiny deciduous shrub that reaches an approximate height and spread of 1.5 metres. This compact, dense plant showcases rounded leaves, just 3 cm long, in a striking dark purple-red colour that turns to attractive shades of red in autumn. In spring, the Purple Japanese Barberry blooms with small, red-tinged yellow flowers that beautifully contrast with the dark foliage. Come autumn, it also produces small red berries, adding seasonal interest and attracting birds.

This barberry variety thrives in moist but well drained to well-drained soils and prefers full sun to enhance its foliage colour, though it can tolerate partial shade. It is hardy and low-maintenance, making it an excellent choice for adding vibrant colour to mixed borders, as a low hedge, or as a striking standalone specimen.

AKA Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpureum', Berberis atropurpurea,  Purple Japanese Barberry

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
