Description

Acer shirasawanum ‘Autumn Moon’ is a wonderful, rare variety of Japanese Maple tree admired for its beautiful foliage that changes colour with the seasons. Also known as ‘Full Moon’ Maple, this tree’s palmate, lobed leaves take on hues of bright yellow, green, and orange in the spring and summer, later turning red and burnt orange in the autumn. In spring, the foliage is accompanied by small, upright clusters of pink and cream flowers, which are then followed by brown winged samaras.

Small and bushy with an upright habit, ‘Autumn Moon’ is slow-growing and would be ideal either as a specimen plant for smaller gardens or as part of a mixed bed or border. It is also suitable for planting in a pot or container—perfect for brightening up a patio. Tolerates most soil types that are moist and well-draining, in either a full sun or partial shade position. Expect ‘Autumn Moon’ to reach an approximate height and spread of 3 x 3 metres in 20 years.

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
