Description

Parrotia persica 'Vanessa' is a fabulous small to medium-sized tree which is admired for its beautiful colours, though it offers plenty of interest beyond its foliage. Young leaves, which emerge bronze and red when young, turn green in summer, and then brilliant shades of purple, red and orange in autumn. Flaking bark provides further interest once the leaves have fallen as well as small red flowers akin to those of Hamamelis, which emerge on bare stems in late winter to early spring.

Persian ironwood 'Vanessa' will form a more narrow and upright habit of growth than Parrotia persica, making it ideal for smaller gardens. A great option for varied year-round interest and a reliable choice for the garden, having won the RHS Award of Garden Merit, Parrotia persica 'Vanessa' prefers a full sun position for the best colour as well as a moist well-drained soil. Expect an approximate height and spread of 7 x 4 metres in 20 years.

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
