Description

The neat, pyramidal growth habit and fantastic autumn colour of Liquidambar styraciflua 'Palo Alto' make it a popular choice. The Maple-like leaves have particularly long, slender lobes. Bright green in summer, they turn striking shades of orange and red in autumn. Inconspicuous flowers are followed by spiky dark brown fruits, whilst deeply fissured bark creates further interest all year round.

Growing to 10 x 6 metres in 20 years, Liquidambar styraciflua 'Palo Alto' makes a fine specimen in medium and large gardens. An adaptable variety of Sweet Gum tree, 'Palo Alto' can cope with full sun to partial shade, exposed positions and acidic to slightly alkaline soil. For the best colours, plant in full sun.

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
