Description

Often planted purely for its vibrant autumn colours, Liquidambar styraciflua 'Lane Roberts' is a beautiful tree right through spring to autumn. Large, star shaped, lobed leaves are glossy green in spring and summer, before turning brilliant shades of red and purple in the autumn. The corky bark is fissured, an attribute popular with children who find enjoyment in creating bark rubbings.

Growing to 10 x 6 metres in 20 years, this Sweet Gum tree has a broad, upright habit and is most deserving of a space in the garden. Plant in a position with full sun to partial shade. Liquidambar 'Lane Roberts' was named after a gynecologist who delivered two children both of whom became presidents of the RHS society. This is fitting as it now holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
