Description

Alnus glutinosa, commonly known as the Common Alder, is a large, fast-growing deciduous tree native to the UK, reaching up to 25m in height with an 8m spread at maturity. It has a broad, conical shape and features rounded, bright green leaves that contrast beautifully with the brown fruits produced in spring. In autumn, it develops catkins from grey-purple buds, adding seasonal interest. This robust tree thrives in all soil types, whether exposed or sheltered, and flourishes in full sun, making it an excellent choice for diverse landscape setting.

AKA Native Alder, Common Alder, Black Alder

Planting Steps

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
