Description

Alnus cordata, commonly known as the Italian Alder, is a medium-sized deciduous tree that typically reaches a height of 12m with a spread of 8m at maturity. In summer, it produces distinctive cone-like brown fruits up to 2.5cm long, followed by striking yellow male catkins up to 10cm in winter, once the leaves have fallen. This hardy tree is highly tolerant of wet conditions, thriving in both moist, well-drained and poorly drained soils. It performs best in full sun, making it an excellent choice for a variety of landscapes, especially in areas prone to dampness.

AKA: Italian alder, Alnus tiliacea hort. Ex. Rehd. Alnus cordifolia

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
