Description

An attractive upright Rowan tree, Sorbus 'Glendoick Spire' has arching branches of toothed leaves that give a fern like appearance. Clusters of small white flowers in spring are popular with pollinators. The flowers are followed by vibrant, dark pink berries in autumn, which coincide with the dark green foliage turning yellows, oranges and red.

Sorbus 'Glendoick Spire' will grow to a height of 5 metres with spread of 2.5 metres in 20 years. The columnar habit is suited to locations with limited space or for lining driveways, where it will bring changing colour throughout spring to autumn. 'Glendoick Spire' suits a sunny or partially shaded position and can cope with exposure to inland wind.

Aftercare Advice

Rowan require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

Rowan trees require a strong framework to support their many berries, so it is good to encourage this by raising the crown in summer. Simply prune the lower branches and any crossing, damaged or diseased branches within the crown. Hard pruning can be carried out in the dormant season, from autumn to winter.
