Description

Malus 'Gorgeous' has large, slender white flowers that have a star shaped appearance. The flowers burst open from pink buds in spring and are followed by glossy, red crab apple fruits that are sometimes orange tinted in autumn. The large fruits are produced in abundance and persist well on the tree. The dark green foliage turns yellow/bronze in the autumn before falling.

Very deserving of its name, Malus 'Gorgeous' is also a good variety for crab apple jelly. Alternatively, leave the fruits on the tree to create an attractive winter display and provide food for wildlife. Growing to just 5 x 4 metres in 20 years, this Crab Apple is a small tree that will become slightly spreading in form. 'Gorgeous' grows well in most positions but is happiest when the soil is moist and well-drained.

This variety has large crab apples ideal for culinary use, so is sold with zero VAT.

AKA Malus × atrosanguinea 'Gorgeous', Crab Apple Gorgeous, Fruiting Crab Apple tree

Aftercare Advice

Crab Apple trees require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

You can harvest culinary Crab Apples in early autumn or leave them for birds to enjoy. The trees should be pruned in winter but do not require hard pruning. Avoid trimming the tips of branches. Simply remove any dead or damaged branches and shoots at the base of the tree i.e. suckers and water sprouts.
