Description

Malus 'Rosehip' is named for the very large, gloriously glossy, bright red crab apples that display pronounced calyces, giving the appearance of Rosehips. The juicy fruits cover this Crab Apple tree in autumn and are ideal for making crab apple jelly due to their size and good levels of pectin. Glowing white, single flowers in spring look beautiful against the mid-to-dark green foliage and are attractive to wildlife such as honeybees.

A small tree, Malus 'Rosehip' grows to just 5 x 4 metres in 20 years and is sure to compliment even the smallest space with its pretty flowers and stunning red fruits. This flowering Crab Apple tree benefit from being pollution tolerant and suited to most conditions, growing particularly well in moist, well-drained soils.

This variety has large crab apples ideal for culinary use, so is sold with zero VAT.

Planting Steps

Aftercare Advice

Crab Apple trees require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

You can harvest culinary Crab Apples in early autumn or leave them for birds to enjoy. The trees should be pruned in winter but do not require hard pruning. Avoid trimming the tips of branches. Simply remove any dead or damaged branches and shoots at the base of the tree i.e. suckers and water sprouts.
