Description

Cercis canadensis 'Red Force' is an upright, slightly spreading tree which is admired for its large, heart-shaped leaves which exhibit gorgeous shades of purple and burgundy. This foliage, which appears on the tree for most of the year for prolonged seasonal interest, is preceded by vibrant pink flowers in springtime. The flowers emerge on bare stems directly from the tree’s main stems (rather than new growth or shoots) for a unique and distinctive floral display – in the botanical world this is referred to as cauliflory.

Hardy and low-maintenance, Cercis canadensis 'Red Force' prefers a full sun position for the best leaf colour (though will tolerate partial shade) and a moist, well-draining site. Expect an approximate height and spread of 4 x 3 metres in 20 years.

AKA Eastern Redbud, Canadian Redbud, Cercis canadensis 'Minrouge3'

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
