Description

Vibrant green year-round foliage and a neat, slightly pyramidal upright form make 'Smaragd' a great choice for many situations. Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd' can be planted as a single specimen for a stand alone feature or in small quantities to punctuate a border and create structure. It can also be used for hedging, although it takes a few years to knit together into a consistent screen.

Known as a White Cedar or Arborvitae, Thuja 'Smaragd' can be expected to reach a height of 4+ metres and spread of 2 metres in 20 years. Any moist, well-drained soil in full or part sun will suit. This conifer has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

AKA Smaragd arborvitae, White Cedar Smaragd, Thuya Smaragd

Planting Steps

Aftercare Advice

Conifers require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

Most Conifers need very little pruning. Simply remove any dead, diseased or awkwardly placed branches as and when you see them.
