A striking evergreen pleached tree, Photinia Ă— fraseri 'Red Robin' has bright red new foliage and stems, with leaves turning a dark, glossy green as they mature. The bright red growth appears in spring and autumn, especially if encouraged by regular pruning. Clusters of ivory coloured flowers in spring add further interest, with flowering being more common when it is grown in full sun.

Our pleached Photinia trees have been carefully and expertly trained over a number of years to create beautiful screening trees, sometimes known as hedging in the sky or stilt hedging. Photinia 'Red Robin' is a reasonably vigorous evergreen and in this pleached form it is ideal as interesting year-round screening and for creating privacy.

Our containerised Pleached trees are available year-round, unlike rootball forms. Please call our Sales and Service team on 01943 660870 to discuss requirements.

Planting Advice for Pleached Photinia Red Robin Trees

When planting pleached Photinia trees, prepare the planting area by removing all weeds and grass within a metre of your desired planting hole. Dig a square hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide. To help the tree establish more effectively, sprinkle root grow in the hole.

It is a two person job (minimum) to place the rootball in the hole. Then, using 50% of the original soil and 50% compost, fill in the hole and firm around gently. Avoid banking it up around the collar of the tree. We recommend planting pleached trees with an extra large stake and tie kit - instructions are in the planting guide.

Pruning Advice for Pleached Photinia Red Robin Trees

Formative pruning has already been carefully and expertly carried out on all our pleached trees, including this Photinia. Going forwards, you will need to carry out pruning to maintain the shape and encourage the bright red new growth.

The bamboo frame that comes on the tree can be cut off when the pleached tree is mature enough.

The product table at the bottom of the page gives the forms and sizes available for this variety. Please note, photos are a guideline as all plants are unique. *Pot sizes may vary. Below are definitions of terms:

Supplied Size: Height measured from the top of the pot.

Single Stem tree: Classic tree with one trunk, pruned for a beautiful, natural shape.

Top grafted tree: A height next to this form refers to the length of clear stem, which will not grow taller. Only the head of branches will develop. Ideal for small spaces.

Feathered tree: Branches from the bottom of the trunk all the way up. These branches can be removed if a clear stem is required.

Multi Stem tree: Two or more stems arising from or near ground level, growing from one root system.

Bush: A plant with many stems low down, rather than one clear stem.

Clump: Several plants in one pot that give the appearance of a bushy multi stem tree.

Climber: Naturally climbing plant. Usually delivered running up a cane, ready to position in the garden.

Standard Tree: A more mature tree with an upright clear stem of approximately 1.8m-2.0m (measured from the soil to the lowest branches of the crown). Standards are available in different forms relating to their girth size (circumference of the stem measured 1m above soil level), not height.
