Photinia × fraseri 'Red Robin' is highly sought after for its striking evergreen foliage. Bright red new spring foliage contrast against the mature leaves that have turned a gorgeous glossy green. In addition, 'Red Robin' produces attractive ivory white flowers in April–May, making it a great tree for year-round interest.

This evergreen Photinia is easy to look after and will grow well in partial shade or full sun when given a well drained soil. Requiring little pruning, it does take well to heavy pruning if you wish to maintain a particular shape. It is also popular in topiary lollipop form outside doorways, as hedging or pleached hedging.

Photinia Red Robin is also called the Christmas berry tree and indeed makes a wonderful gift whether at Christmas or any other time of the year - just add gift wrapping to make it extra special.

Planting Advice for Photinia Red Robin

Our pot grown Red Robin trees can be planted at any time of year. When planting into the ground, remove weeds and grass within a metre of the planting spot, then dig a square hole as deep as the root mass and twice as wide. We recommend sprinkling root grow in the hole to help the tree establish.

Remove the production pot, gently loosen the roots and place into the planting hole. Mix 50% of the original soil with 50% compost. Use this to fill in the hole and firm around gently, taking care not to bank soil up around the collar of the tree.

Use a stake and tie kit to anchor the roots of Photinia tree (unless it is a lollipop or bush form as these don't require staking). Water around the base. Further information is available in the step-by-step planting guide.

Aftercare Advice for Photinia Red Robin

For the first year, water well and regularly in spring and summer. Increase watering in hot or dry weather. When planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. We sell irrigation kits for use in the ground or in pots.

Keep the area free of competing weeds and grass for the first few growing seasons. If needed, use a rabbit guard.

Pruning Advice for Photinia Red Robin

Pruning of Photinia can be carried out at any time of year and encourages the bright red new growth. We recommend pruning topiary forms each year to keep their shape.

The product table at the bottom of the page gives the forms and sizes available for this variety. Please note, photos are a guideline as all plants are unique. *Pot sizes may vary. Below are definitions of terms:

Supplied Size: Height measured from the top of the pot.

Single Stem tree: Classic tree with one trunk, pruned for a beautiful, natural shape.

Top grafted tree: A height next to this form refers to the length of clear stem, which will not grow taller. Only the head of branches will develop. Ideal for small spaces.

Feathered tree: Branches from the bottom of the trunk all the way up. These branches can be removed if a clear stem is required.

Multi Stem tree: Two or more stems arising from or near ground level, growing from one root system.

Bush: A plant with many stems low down, rather than one clear stem.

Clump: Several plants in one pot that give the appearance of a bushy multi stem tree.

Climber: Naturally climbing plant. Usually delivered running up a cane, ready to position in the garden.

Standard Tree: A more mature tree with an upright clear stem of approximately 1.8m-2.0m (measured from the soil to the lowest branches of the crown). Standards are available in different forms relating to their girth size (circumference of the stem measured 1m above soil level), not height.
