Description

Originating in France, Ginkgo biloba ‘Fastigiata Blagon’ is a wonderful maidenhair tree with a columnar shape and upright growth habit. Its main branches grow slightly upwards, and its crown remains narrow when mature, making ‘Fastigiata Blagon’ an ideal choice for narrow or tighter spaces.

‘Fastigiata Blagon’ grows distinctive, ginkgo fan-shaped leaves which can reach a height and width of up to 10cm. The foliage emerges light green in the spring, later deepening in colour in the summer. The leaves then take on a pure, golden yellow colour for a striking autumnal display. ‘Fastigiata Blagon’ looks particularly spectacular when planted in groups for lining an avenue and, as it is tolerant to pollution, would be ideal for urban settings. This is a male variety of ginkgo, so doesn’t produce any fruits.

Maidenhair ‘Fastigiata Blagon’ will tolerate any moist but well-draining soil type, and a full sun to partial shade position. Resistant to drought when established, the approximate height and spread of this tree in 20 years is 8 x 2 metres.

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
