Description

Ceanothus thyrsiflorus repens is a very small evergreen tree with panicles of pretty blue flowers that are popular with bees. Known more commonly as creeping blue blossom, it flowers through spring to early summer, whilst the glossy green foliage provides interest throughout the year.

Growing naturally as a spreading shrub, we have also grown Ceanothus repens with a clear stem to create a wonderful little lollipop tree. It is ideal for container planting or in borders to provide year round interest. Ceanothus require a fairly well drained soil in a sunny situation, that is not exposed to drying winds.

AKA Californian Lilac tree, Ceanothus thyrsiflorus var. repens, Creeping Blue Blossom, Blueblossom

Planting Steps

Aftercare Advice

Ceanothus require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

Ceanothus do not require a lot of pruning. Simply remove any dead, diseased or awkwardly placed branches from the tree as and when you see them.
