Description

Cornus alba 'Kesselringii' is a deciduous Dogwood shrub with deep red shoots that turn a blackened-plum colour in winter. It has ovate green leaves and small cream flowers in spring or summer. These are followed by white berries and the leaves turning red in autumn, before dropping to reveal the dramatic dark stems.

A very hardy and vigorous growing shrub, Cornus 'Kesselringii' will grow well in most soil conditions. It is suited to either full sun or partial shade and copes with some exposure to the elements.

Dogwoods look great either individually or as a group for adding drama in autumn and winter borders. We also offer additional Dogwood bushes with a variety of stem colours.

AKA Black stem Dogwood, Purple stem Dogwood

Planting Steps

Aftercare Advice

Dogwood shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

Avoid pruning Dogwood shrubs in the first year. Each subsequent year we recommend pruning hard around February, so you benefit from enjoying the colourful stem for a little longer without any detrimental effect on spring growth. Follow pruning by mulching and fertilising to encourage new growth, as it is this new growth that displays the vivid colours.
