Description

One of the most popular Japanese flowering cherry trees, Prunus 'Kanzan' is loaded with blousy, pink, double flowers with frilly edges from March-April. The pink blossom has a hint of purple to it and is followed by the unfurling of bronze coloured new leaves. The foliage turns mid-green, before adopting burnt orange colours in autumn.

Prunus 'Kanzan', also called 'Sekiyama', has a slowly spreading habit and looks equally magnificent planted in avenues or grown as a single specimen. A medium sized ornamental Cherry Blossom tree, it will grow to an estimated 6 x 4 metres in 20 years. It is suited to most positions including polluted sites or acidic to alkaline soil, but does require a spot that avoids very wet or shallow, chalky soil. For a similar tree with purple foliage see Prunus Royal Burgundy.

Aftercare Advice

Flowering Cherry trees require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

It is beneficial to carry out formative pruning for the first few years by creating a balanced branch framework and removing badly placed shoots. After two to three years, you will only need to remove any damaged or unwanted branches. On top grafted forms, very occasionally the grafted stem may produce shoots and these should be pruned back. The best time of year to prune Cherry Blossom trees is straight after flowering.
