Description

Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' is one of our most popular Redbud varieties. It's a dramatic small tree grown primarily for the glorious heart-shaped leaves that emerges a glossy, vibrant ruby red. The foliage darken to a rich purple-plum shade for the summer and in autumn it turn striking shades of orange, red, yellow and purple. The autumn sun makes some leaves appear translucent, whilst others reflect light - plant in a position where the sun can backlight the foliage for full effect.

In spring, this North American Redbud can produce clusters of tiny, deep pink, pea-like flowers ahead of the foliage. As a rounded and bushy tree, expect it to grow to a height and spread of 5 x 4 metres in 20 years. When grown as a shrub, it will reach 4 x 4 meters. Most well drained soils will be suitable and for the best leaf colour, plant in an open, sunny position. Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' deservedly has the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
