Description
An elegant small tree, Crataegus orientalis has especially ornate, deeply lobed leaves that are silvery-grey and woolly, giving a smoky appearance. The downy foliage acts as a wonderful foil to the clusters of chalk white flowers with pink anthers produced in May to June.
In autumn the leaves turn yellow and bronze, with large deep amber/orange coloured haws appearing. The haws decorate the branches well into the winter, a time when the flaking bark also provides interest.
Crataegus orientalis has a flattish, spreading habit with well spaced and lightly pendulous, thorned branches. A height and spread of 4 x 4 metres in 20 years can be expected from this small tree. As with other Crataegus, Orientalis is tough (coming from a mountain habitat) and will tolerate almost any position or soil and if planted in a windy area, the form becomes sculptured and craggy.
AKA Oriental Hawthorn, Eastern Thorn, Silver Thorn Tree
