Description

Sorbus vilmorinii 'Pink Charm' is, as the name suggests, a very charming Rowan tree that offers something new with every season. Bright red berries which emerge in autumn take on shades of hot pink and then fade in colour as the season progresses, taking on a pleasant pale pink colour. The berries are preceded by small white flowers that grow in late spring to early summer against slender green leaves. This foliage takes on tones of red and purple in autumn.

Sorbus vilmorinii 'Pink Charm' has a slightly more spreading habit than other Rowan trees but remains a compact tree that is ideal for smaller gardens. Its light and airy canopy makes it an ideal choice for creating dappled shade in warmer months. A good choice for urban areas and exposed coastal regions, Vilmorin's 'Pink Charm' is happy in most moist, well-draining soils and a full sun to partial shade position. Expect an approximate height and spread of 4 x 3 metres in 20 years.

Aftercare Advice

Rowan require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

Rowan trees require a strong framework to support their many berries, so it is good to encourage this by raising the crown in summer. Simply prune the lower branches and any crossing, damaged or diseased branches within the crown. Hard pruning can be carried out in the dormant season, from autumn to winter.
