Description

A lovely Dwarf Cherry Plum tree, Prunus cerasifera 'Hessei' is a popular choice for small gardens or patio pots. Growing to just 2 x 2 metres in 20 years, the tree is slightly lollypop shaped with a clear, straight stem and a bushy head. In March, the branches are smothered in pretty white flowers, occasionally developing a pink tinge around the edges.

The foliage is equally as attractive as the flowers, with bright green leaves that turn darker with age, displaying a slightly variegated, unusual mottled edge of pink, white and purple. In autumn, the foliage turns red, purple and yellow.

Popular with wildlife for its prolific flowers, Prunus cerasifera 'Hessei' is suited to most soils, except wet or very shallow, chalky conditions. This Dwarf Cherry Blossom tree is a fantastic all-rounder for the smaller garden.

Planting Steps

Aftercare Advice

Flowering Cherry trees require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

It is beneficial to carry out formative pruning for the first few years by creating a balanced branch framework and removing badly placed shoots. After two to three years, you will only need to remove any damaged or unwanted branches. On top grafted forms, very occasionally the grafted stem may produce shoots and these should be pruned back. The best time of year to prune Cherry Blossom trees is straight after flowering.
