Description

In the spring, Malus 'Snowcloud' lives up to its name, producing snowy white clusters of double flowers from pink buds. These long lasting flowers are scented and popular with bees for their pollen and nectar. The foliage of this Flowering Crab Apple is mid-green and turns a bronzed yellow colour in the autumn.

Small, yellow crab apples develop on Malus 'Snowcloud' after flowering. Although not suited to culinary use due to their size, they are very popular with wildlife and create an attractive winter display, splashing colour onto the bare branches.

Growing to an estimated height and spread of 5 x 4 metres in 20 years, this small upright tree can be enjoyed even in smaller gardens and is especially suited to urban areas as it is pollution tolerant.

Aftercare Advice

Crab Apple trees require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

You can harvest culinary Crab Apples in early autumn or leave them for birds to enjoy. The trees should be pruned in winter but do not require hard pruning. Avoid trimming the tips of branches. Simply remove any dead or damaged branches and shoots at the base of the tree i.e. suckers and water sprouts.
