Description

A large ornamental Horse Chestnut tree with many features, Aesculus hippocastanum is most well known for its conkers.

Erect panicles of white flowers in May are followed by the conkers, which are a source of childhood joy. Large mid-green, deeply lobed leaves turn shades of burnt orange and bronze in the autumn before falling.

Aesculus hippocastanum is a statuesque tree that will grow to 9 x 8 meters in 20 years. This Horse Chestnut tree is an excellent environmental choice as it has a long life span in which it will store a large amount of carbon. The flowers, leaves and conkers also provide a source of food to a number of different species of wildlife. When planted in any well-drained soil, it is decidedly hardy and tolerant of exposure.

AKA Horse-chestnut, Conker tree

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
