Description
Actinidia kolomikta, also known as a Variegated Kiwi Vine or Michurin actinidia, is a fast-growing, hardy climber with twining branches, admired particularly for its attractive variegated foliage. The heart-shaped leaves emerge green, but as the plant matures, the variegation appears, as if the leaves have been dipped in pink and white paint, creating a wonderful display of colour. The overall effect is very striking and has made Actinidia kolomikta a very popular choice of climbing plant. Small, lightly scented white flowers emerge in early summer. It can also produce tiny berries similar to kiwi fruit.
This Variegated Kiwi Vine tolerates partial shade but is best planted in a full sun position, ideally in a sheltered location, in any moist but well-draining soil. Trained against a sunny wall, trellis or pergola, Actinidia kolomikta would make a fantastic addition to any garden, having won the RHS Award of Garden Merit. As it grows masses of leaves, it would be an ideal choice for hiding an unattractive wall or brickwork. You can expect this plant to reach an approximate height and spread of 5 x 4 metres in 20 years.
