Description

One of the best attributes of Malus 'Golden Gem' is the abundance of dainty, yellow fruits that emerge in the autumn following the fragrant pink blushed, white flowers of spring. This deciduous Flowering Crab Apple is also known for being an especially good pollinator due to the timeliness and compatibility of its pollen.

Like other Crab Apple trees, 'Golden Gem' prefers full sun or partial shade and grows well in any soil other than very wet soil. This Malus tree has a neat shape and size and at maturity can be expected to reach a height and spread of about 4 x 3 metres. The Golden yellow fruits produced by this tree make it a popular gift for golden wedding anniversaries.

Aftercare Advice

Crab Apple trees require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

You can harvest culinary Crab Apples in early autumn or leave them for birds to enjoy. The trees should be pruned in winter but do not require hard pruning. Avoid trimming the tips of branches. Simply remove any dead or damaged branches and shoots at the base of the tree i.e. suckers and water sprouts.
