Description

Amelanchier alnifolia 'Smokey' is an unusual variety of Juneberry typically grown for its edible, heavy-cropping fruits, which are considerably larger and sweeter than other Amelanchier varieties. You can either enjoy the fruits fresh, use them in cooking, or leave them on the tree for the birds to enjoy. Sometimes referred to as Smokey Saskatoon, this Amelanchier is even grown commercially for its fruit in Canada, where the variety originates.

Clusters of white, star-shaped flowers emerge in spring alongside young, bronze-tinged foliage. Mid-green summer leaves make way for shades of orange, red and purple in autumn. Like other Serviceberry trees, Amelanchier 'Smokey' prefers full sun to partial shade and a moist, well-drained soil. Upright with a slightly spreading habit, you can expect an approximate height and spread of 3 x 3 metres in 20 years.

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
