Description

A fantastic tree for autumn colour, the green leaves of Nyssa sylvatica turn striking shades of orange, red and yellow in autumn. Also known as a Black Tupelo or Black Gum tree, it rivals Japanese Maples for autumn colour, but makes a bigger impact due to size and is and better suited to damper conditions. It is still a relatively small tree with an attractive symmetrical, conical shape spreading to 5 x 4 metres in 20 year.

Nyssa sylvatica was introduced to the Netherlands from eastern North America in approximately 1747 and added to many European gardens over the following centuries. Often found in the wild in wetter areas, even close to streams where the water reflects the spectacular hues of its blazing foliage.  It is therefore well suited to moist soils as long as they are well-draining and will tolerate standing in water for short periods. On drier soils, keep well watered in dry spells and during establishment.

It grows well in either a sheltered sunny or partially shaded site. Acidic soils are favoured, but it will grow in slightly alkaline/chalky conditions. It is largely pest and disease free and is low maintenance with little pruning needed on this relatively slow growing tree. The Tupelo tree is a great choice where autumn colour is a must.

AKA Black Tupelo tree, Black Gum tree, Sourgum, Pepperidge, Beetlebung

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
